Active language-learning and vocational practice live

Aktiv lernen - Sprache und Berufliche Praxis Life

The project

The learning and command of a foreign language, intercultural competence, work and practical experience abroad are qualities of growing importance. Above all in view of the dynamic changes in the demands placed upon qualified employees and junior staff members at work in SME, administrative and political institutions.

To meet such demands and supplemental to solid theoretical instruction, the Kolping foreign language school in Heilbronn offers it’s pupils practical experience abroad. This offer is made in the years 2007 and 2008 through the support of the Leonardo da Vinci – Mobility Project: sixty pupils, who successfully completed the two year training to become either a European secretary or  a business correspondent, had the opportunity to take part in a three week study trip.

The Students travelled to Spain or France for three weeks and were received by a partner organisation and were also given instruction in the respective language. In addition to foreign language instruction, SME and of large companies in the region has been visited. In this way, the students got an idea of the economical makeup of the country and had the possibility of making international ties. A notable feature of this project was that its organisation was a responsibility of the students. The project took place in the form of a project within a project. The travel and programme dates were co-ordinated in the framework of office-management classes. During the courses in business and foreign language, a contact dialogue has been made; the realisation of travel plans (the concrete selection of a means of transportation, of making contact with the respective enterprises, partner institutions and the booking of accommodations) took place. The project within a project has been expanded in an aspect relative to business management: the students started research in Germany which they completed abroad.

Students have benefited from this in many ways; they have strengthened their foreign language skills through the use thereof in real-world situations. They also developed important knowledge regarding the mannerism and the language of their international business partner or customer. Additionally the personal development of the student was enhanced through their stay abroad.
