Language, profession and culture abroad

Sprache, Beruf und Kultur im Ausland

The project

The command of a foreign language, intercultural competence, work and practical experience abroad are qualities of growing importance. Above all in view of the dynamic changes in the demands placed upon qualified employees and junior staff members at work in companies, administrative and political institutions. To meet such demands and supplemental to solid theoretical instruction, the Kolping Foreign Language School Heilbronn offers its students practical experience abroad. This offer is made possible through the support of the project “Language, profession and culture abroad”: 38 students, who participate in the two year training to become either a “European secretary” or a “Business correspondent”, took part in a three week study trip in spring 2010 in France, Spain and Great Britain.

Abroad, the students participated in language lessons of the partner organisation. In addition to foreign language instruction, they visited SME and companies in the region. In this way, the students got an idea of the economical makeup of the country and had the possibility of making international ties. A notable feature of this project was that its organisation was a responsibility of the students. The project took place in the form of a “project within the project”. The travel and programme dates were co-ordinated in the framework of office-management classes. During the courses in business and foreign language the realisation of travel plans took place. The project within a project has been expanded in an aspect relative to business management: the students started research in Germany which they completed abroad.

Leisure events and cultural events completed the study trip. Some students lived in host families and experienced family life with its many facets.

The students profited from the study visit in many ways, they strengthened their foreign language skills through the use thereof in real-world situations. They also developed important knowledge regarding the mannerism and the language of international business partner or customer. Additionally their personal development was enhanced through their stay abroad.
