MIGRANTS+ Empower Migrants

The project

Immigration is a fact of life for every country in the European Union (EU). Each year one and a half up to two millions people immigrate in the EU. Those figures strongly underline that immigration is emerging as a key issue across Europe.

Enhancing active participation of migrants in a society as equal members and preventing their marginalisation was at centre stage of the MIGRANTS+ project. In the course of the two-year cooperation nine organisations in eight European countries further developed a software tool which is dedicated to be used in training centres, information centres and NGOs addressing Migrants.

The software tool named SOAS (Self Assessment of Skills) could be used to assess migrant’s skills and competencies in ten different categories. General skills such as intercultural competence, literacy, communication skills and human relations as well as professional skills (numeracy, use of internet, ICT, occupational health, employment laws, social security and human rights) can be tested in all partner languages. Based on the results the SOAS tool proposes users issues of interest, which are helpful with regard to improvement of skills.

To evaluate the usage and effectiveness of the SAOS tool pilot actions were implemented in Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, and Turkey, in which a total of 180 migrants took part. The evaluation results made obvious that it is an appropriate tool to detect learning needs in basic skills and to provide guidance and assistance with regard to professional and personal development.

The demo version of the software is found on the project website.
